Subterranean

A one hour dramatic series by Jim Donovan

Welcome to Toronto’s underground city, the PATH. Down here, in the depths of the fluorescent lit tunnels, head of security and operations, 65 year old Aimé Daniel keeps his eclectic crew in line as they deal with an unexpected crisis unfolding in the subway system. Born in Haiti, Aimé considers maintaining order, decency and respect for the rules his personal responsibility. The job isn’t only his livelihood, a source of satisfaction and pride, it’s also the touchstone of his identity.

Over the years Aimé has become the glue that binds a community of misfits whose lives are anchored in the PATH. There is Sammy, a blind and schizofrenic virtuoso musician. Some say he is a prophet. Others just want him kicked out of the underground. Anton and Nadia Bajraktari are first generation Albanian immigrants running the convenience store. Their relationship sits on the edge of collapse as Anton struggles with debts owed to the Russian Mob. Liv and Tara are teenage runaways from up north living off the grid, or at least underneath it. They are in love and planning a life together. Martina Wozniak, 29, is a mechanical engineer. Somehow her dreams of building bridges and working in aerospace didn’t quite work out and instead she wound up here, navigating the waters of a male dominated world. She keeps everything working… or at leasts tries to. After pounding the pavement for twelve years as a beat cop Peter Murray, 35, took a bullet during a gang related shooting and got taken off the front lines. Now he’s assigned to coordinate with transit security and nurtures a healthy love-hate relationship with Aimé and his crew.

Retirement looms and Aimé is being shown the door by management. A new upstart manager, Vito Rosato, is poised to replace him. As they celebrate Aimé’s impending retirement in 4 weeks, a dark secret from his violent past lurks in the shadows, haunting him in the tunnels as a series of gruesome “accidents” begin to occur daily. Someone is up to something and Aimé will not rest until he gets to the bottom of it.

As a young man growing up in turbulent times, Aimé was recruited by the Tonton Macoutes, Haiti’s dreaded secret police during the brutal Duvalier regime. He had to do some things to survive that he regrets. It is a sin that he will now need to face, 40 years later.
